Are you curious how to style your front door decor to look like it came straight out of a magazine? Check out these helpful tips and suggestions for the chicest front door around.
The front door is the first thing that people see when they walk up to your home. It’s your home’s first impression.
Many of us like to take time to arrange the perfect front door decor to help emphasize our style and taste. We like to showcase our favorite decor pieces and dress up our homes in the same way that we dress ourselves in the morning.
Our decor is what turns a generic door into the entrance of our home.
This post is all about how to style your front door like a professional to get a stylish look that reflects you.
The Setup
The Door
The first thing to look at is the door itself. The other decor choices will depend on the style of your door.
Is the door decorative or plain? Does it have windows, metal details, or decorative paneling? What color is your door? Determine if your door is a style focal point, making a statement on its own, or if it is plain and could serve as a backdrop for decor pieces.
Balance & Symmetry
The next thing to look at is the balance and the symmetry of the doorway. Is the door centered within the doorway? Or is it off to one side?
If it is off to the side, then the decor will focus on the opposite side to create balance. If it is in the center, then the decor will be more symmetrical and placed on either side of the door.
The goal is to create simple visual balance, encouraging a feeling of calm.
The Style Of The House
Determining the style of your house will help to create a stylish front door that feels cohesive. For example, it makes less style sense to decorate a mountain home with coastal accents. Determining the style of the house will inform the rest of your front door decor.
Color & Contrast
Keeping the color of your front door in mind, determine a color palette that works for your home. If you have a neutral colored door, then select colors that work harmoniously together with at least one contrasting color for a wow factor.
Analogous colors (which work harmoniously together) sit next to each other on the color wheel. Complementary colors (contrasting or opposite colors) sit across from each other on the color wheel.
Triadic colors (evenly spaced around the color wheel) are also commonly used by designers. They make a colorful statement with a strong palette that still works smoothly together. However, if you select a triadic color palette, choose one of the colors for a statement and the other two as supporting colors.
Use this knowledge to help you in selecting colors. Click here to examine a color wheel and learn a bit about color theory. You can also find inspiration from color palette websites such as Design Seeds (my personal favorite).
Layering Diagram
Use this diagram to help you create layers of visual interest! As a general guide, start at the center of each numbered section and work you way out, and down.
Center Decor Components
To begin, pick a focal point. If the focal point is the door itself, then the rest of your decor will be more simple and neutral, echoing elements of the door.
If you have a plain door, you can decide on a different focal point. Maybe it’s a piece to hang on the door (like your favorite wreath), or perhaps it is a statement door mat. Whatever you choose, try to make the focal point aligned to the center of the door. Once you decide where you want your eye to be drawn to first, then you are ready to move on to selecting the decor pieces.
Front Door Decor
If you have a decorative door already, then this first step is done for you! You don’t want to add more busy features that will detract from the beauty of the door. Let your door’s character shine through!
However, if you have a plain door then you have the perfect backdrop to select a fun element to hang. Some great options would be a simple wreath, a basket with flowers or greenery, or even a shiny metal door knocker. Think understated (rather than kitschy) natural elements for the chicest looks. Remember, this is still the outdoors, so natural elements feel more at home outside.
Front Door Mat
If you select a decorative patterned door mat, than this alone can make a lovely statement.
If you select a simpler mat that is less busy, you may want to try layering it over a thinner textured or patterned rug for added visual interest.
Side Decor Components
Lights & Sconces
Now that you have the center decor pieces selected, it’s time to look at the side decor.
Is there room on each side of the door? If so, try selecting two matching sconces to illuminate each side. If you have a hanging light fixture above a double door, try two wreaths (one on each door) instead. The key here is balance.
Planters
Moving your eye further down, think of how you would like to fill the space that is waist level and down. There is vertical space here that could be filled with plants or statues of varying heights. Varying heights will add interest. You could also opt for perfect symmetry here with matching planters on each side.
If your door is over to one side, then fill the other side with taller elements of varying heights to add balance. For example, this could be a single sconce light with varied planters beneath it.
If you want a front door that looks like a professional designer styled it, then the key points to keep in mind are have one focal point, strive for balance and symmetry, and keep a color palette in mind.
